Basic Orange 30 years: Read our secret

In September 1995 we started with a great fascination for the internet and technology. We have now grown into a driven and personal web agency with a great team that works with customers every day on online growth, innovation and results.

Thirty years of existence in an industry that is constantly changing does not happen by itself. I am regularly asked what our secret is. The answer is actually very simple: keep moving. Longevity does not mean that you are stuck in the past, but rather that you have been agile and innovative enough to adapt again and again.

From online CD store to web agency

In 1995, the internet slowly started to become part of everyday life. From our passion for technology and online innovation, we built one of the first online CD stores in the Netherlands. Not much later, companies discovered how great the need was for knowledge of websites and online technology. This is how Basic Orange grew step by step into a web agency.

In the years that followed, we reinvented ourselves several times. We first developed our own systems and software, including a CMS and mail system. That worked well for years, but at some point better open source solutions became available. This meant that we had to rethink our role and added value.

More than technology

Web development alone was no longer enough. Technology became more accessible and could be developed anywhere in the world. That is why we have started to focus more and more on strategy, communication, online growth, personas, optimisation and personalisation. Not only building, but also thinking about how organisations can be successful online.

What makes our work extra special is the long-term collaborations with customers. Many organisations have been working with us for many years. From healthcare institutions and cultural organisations to non-profits and companies in business services.

We grow with their ambitions, think strategically and continue to improve websites and digital platforms step by step. It is precisely these long-term relationships that inspire confidence and ensure that we get to know organisations really well. This allows us to switch faster, provide better advice and achieve sustainable results.

AI as the next step

In recent years, I have seen another such big change emerge: AI. While many companies still see AI mainly as a separate tool, we believe that AI will become a fundamental part of how organisations work, communicate and grow. That is why we are increasingly focusing on practical AI solutions, AI Agents, GEO optimisation and AI support within platforms such as Umbraco.

What excites me most about AI is that it can not only save time, but also make entire processes smarter. Think of AI Agents who automatically process support questions, make internal knowledge accessible or take over repetitive work. This creates more room for creativity, strategy and personal contact.

At the same time, we strongly believe that technology must remain safe, reliable and practically applicable. That's why we always look at the process first and only then at the technology.

True innovation is about people

For me, that is also the core of innovation. Many people immediately think of gadgets, hip start-ups or large tech companies when they think of innovation. But real innovation is usually not about technology itself. It's about understanding what people need and responding to that.

We also try to apply this way of thinking within Basic Orange. Not innovating for the sake of innovating, but using technology where it actually adds value for customers and users.

Continue to grow

Change always involves risks. New directions are interesting, but only if you continue to build on a strong foundation. Our experience, technical knowledge and expertise therefore still form the foundation of Basic Orange. Without that basis, you are mainly concerned with the short term.

What I am perhaps most proud of is that Basic Orange is still independent after 30 years and is still led by the same founder as in 1995. Many agencies from that time have disappeared, been taken over or merged, while we have continued to develop by continuously looking at what customers need and how the market is changing.

For us, innovation is therefore not only about renewing, but above all about staying relevant in a world that is constantly changing. By staying curious, moving along and continuing to learn, we are still here after 30 years with the same energy and passion as in 1995.
