Basic Orange knowledge tip #9

Leverage video as a marketing tool

Research shows that 86% of the companies surveyed use video as a marketing tool (*). Are you already part of this group? Video has really broken through in the past year. From online training courses, product videos, 'how-to' or explainer videos, reviews, unboxings, vlogs, to even videos on webshops to see how a piece of clothing would look 'in real life'. And don't forget: the live streams via Facebook, Instagram and Youtube, which can also be shared afterwards for a larger audience. But what do you need to think about when you start working with video yourself?

Four basic marketing video basics

To create a good online marketing video, it's important to keep the following four principles at hand:

  • Attract: Grab the attention of your target audience within 5 seconds. Can they learn or learn from your video?
  • Fire: Bring your brand to the fore in a natural way. What makes your product, service or company unique? Ensure authenticity.
  • Connect: Make an emotional connection with your viewers. Which of your own people will be the face of the videos? Can you make it a series so that you can reach your target audience more often?
  • Directly: Use clear call-to-actions.

How do you realise your video?

In addition to the prerequisites of a good video, it is important to clarify exactly what you are going to do and how you want to do it. Below are a number of questions that can help you with this.

  • What is the goal? What kind of organisation are you and what do you stand for? Who do you want to reach and what do you want to tell them? What do they want to hear?
  • Is there a plan? For example, is it a series or a one-off? And how do you make sure the video stays short and sweet? Keep the previously mentioned types of videos and basics in mind.
  • Is there a budget, and do you need help? Creating a video takes time and money, and there is a lot of engineering involved. Because of this, it is useful to have someone with some experience on your team.
  • Do you have the equipment at home? A good camera, microphone and light, but also editing software. If you prefer to start small, you can also get a long way by making smart use of various means (filming with your phone).
  • Where, when and how do you want to share the videos? Think about the go-live moment and make sure it is well supported by social media attention. Also consider the different video formats per platform.
  • Can you caption the videos so that viewers can watch your video without sound?

ROI of Video Marketing

You now know what makes a good video and what you need to think about when creating a video. But what does video marketing actually deliver? Here's what marketers have to say about it:

  • 86% get more traffic to the site.
  • 94% say consumers understand their product or service better.
  • 78% say they sell more thanks to video.
  • 87% say the return on investment of video is positive.
  • 43% say video reduces helpdesk load
